Joomla Training Wrapup: Great Class Folks!
I just finished teaching the Installing Joomla! from Scratch workshop which is a free introductory training on how to get Joomla! setup and running on your local computer.

This is great if you’re a developer, someone new to working with Joomla or a designer who works on developing sites because you don’t need hosting space to setup the sites!
It was interesting to hear people’s stories on how they had found out about Joomla.
Pat had quite a few sites setup in Joomla but had been using the Fantastico installer. Fantastico allows you to install Joomla with the click of a button but has shortcomings like not always being updated to the latest version.
Charles was running an older version of Joomla! and wanted to learn how to upgrade to the newest 1.5.x without paying someone else hundreds of dollars to do the install.
We took at look at the new Joomla showcase launched this year.
Workshop Highlights
We covered “gotchas” like how Skype and XAMMP conflict so you need to tell Skype not to use port 80 and 443 as backup ports.
Since Pat had so many sites, I asked her if she had tried the new multi-site Joomla component created under the Google Summer of Code 2009 project. A video link to the creator’s webinar is on the Joomla!’s site.
When upgrading Joomla from 1.0 to 1.5, make sure to read the documentation on how to backup and prepare for the upgrade.
Power Tools For Website Development
My 2 favorite tools I recommended this session were:
7-Zip for unzipping files fast, easy and free
Keepass for secure password management
