Afraid to Upgrade WordPress? 2.8.6

“I can’t afford to have my blog go down from a failed upgrade” is a common answer I hear to the question, “Why aren’t you upgrading?”.

It’s very similar to when your car makes a weird noise and you’re sure that something is terribly wrong!

You can certainly drive around town for a few weeks, hoping the noise will just go away on it’s own (that never happens) or you can bring your car into a mechanic to fix the problem.  Maybe it’s the fear that the repair costs will be high.

Well, I’ve learned that ignoring a problem can be 10X worse!  Several of my friends have not maintained oil levels in their cars and *poof*, they have been faced with a costly engine rebuild of over $1,500.

Don’t wait until your WordPress blog is hacked to upgrade.  Keep up with the version releases!

2.8.6 is out

The current version of WordPress is 2.8.6 which was released 11/12/2009 and you can download it from the WordPress website.

The great news is the WordPress team keeps making it easier and easier to upgrade with each new release.  I did a blog post on 14 Reasons people Don’t Upgrade and have included them below.

14 Reasons People Don’t upgrade WordPress

and I’ve heard a variety of reasons for not upgrading:

  • Afraid blog will break
  • Too busy
  • Afraid theme won’t be compatible
  • Not sure how
  • Don’t want downtime on the site
  • They’re not aware they need to
  • The website designer doesn’t know
  • Don’t want to pay someone else
  • The blog is a hobby, not something taken seriously
  • Corporate headquarters doesn’t like frequent updates
  • Unaware of WordPress community support
  • Language barrier
  • Overconfident and cocky
  • Upgrade seems too complicated
