5 Learning Resources For WordPress Beginners

Are you new to WordPress and have no idea where to start?

We get these sort of email and phone calls all the time so we’re going to share the resources we give to people in our trainings, over the phone and in person when talking about WordPress.  These resources will work for both WordPress.org and WordPress.com even more so now with version 3.1 being released as the two being to look, feel and act more similar with each new release.   Here you will find the meat and potatoes about learning what WordPress is about and how to step into using it.  Enjoy!

We’ve put this site first to help open up your eyes to what WordPress is really about and how amazing it is for BOTH blogging AND websites.  The biggest misconception about WordPress is that it’s only for blogging and that all WordPress sites “look like blogs”.  Check out these designs that say otherwise before you write off WordPress.  Thousands of business owners, organizations, colleges, celebrities, nonprofits and freelancers are finding WordPress to be an amazing website solution.

What you’ll find here: How to use WordPress.  From beginner to advanced

This is where Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, puts all the good stuff about what WordPress is, how to install it, use it, build on it and all the update features.  This should be the first place you to to learn about WordPress before buying a book.  Remember, the information in a book is at least 6 months old by the time it goes to press.  Wordpress is rolling out, on average, two major releases a year so think about that before you plunk down $15 bucks on a book.

This site is full of excellent information on how to start using WordPress, how to customize it and they even offer to help you setup WordPress when you sign up for a hosting service through them.  They attend many of the blogging conferences and cover what’s new in WordPress.  Great site and the founders are truly committed to the WordPress community.

What you’ll find here: Video tutorials, Wordcamp sessions, presentations about WordPress development

This is a great resource!  Since WordPress is an open source community as well, it encourages everyone to participate and recording videos at an event, submitting your how-to screencasts on using WordPress and general discussions about the direction of WordPress from founder, Matt Mullenweg all make for great content here.
