Thank you so much, Adria. As usual, you make ideas clear, accessible and palatable for those of us who are NOT Techie Wordpress Geniuses.I am transitioning my site right now and I was 95% sure what I wanted. Now I am 100% sure. Thank you so much!

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the suggestions.

WPEngine offers a very specific service and caters towards sites that have a lot of traffic and need high availability due to that traffic so at $49/month, it's overkill for new websites.

Page.ly is a way to get a Wordpress site up and running fast and we'll most likely use them for our on-site Wordpress training here in San Francisco but again, at $19.95/month, it's pricey for a new website but I certainly think it would be a great upgrade for someone who's been maintaining their own Wordpress site and want to hand off the maintenance.

I can't list A Small Orange because I had a student hosting with them last year and the student couldn't perform an in-place upgrade due to the restrictive file permissions at the hosting company. The restrictions caused WordPress to prompt him for FTP information (similar to Joomla) and I told him he needed to switch hosts.

I'm working on guides to help people switch between hosting companies because it seems people stay for fear of "losing everything they've worked so hard to build". Website hosting should be like car insurance, not so hard to change :)

Thanks again!

Hi Adria,

Nice to see a hosting roundup. OTOH, I notice the following options are missing; sure would be nice if you could revise and include them? The first three are WordPress-specific hosts, the fourth one of my friends swears by, and the last one is owned by HostGator but was founded by a Georgia Tech grad here in Atlanta and they do a really good job; they've been my host for probably 7 years:

- WP Engine
- Page.ly
- ZippyKid
- VPS.net
- A Small Orange

Hope this helps.

This was perfect! Just what I needed to learn how to install a database on my local machine. Installing Wordpress was a bonus so I can learn how to use it and modify it (I have a WP blog on my business site) that was created for me.

Thanks!

My first training session with Freshworkshops and I will come back for more training programs. I highly recommend these workshops. Today's class "WordPress Theme Training For Beginners" was perfect for me. The instruction and tips were spot on. I have attended a lot of webinar training programs but what made this special was the format and delivery of the instructor. Adria Richards knows her content material and she was able to present it in a style and language they we could all comprehend. This is what you want in training programs. Well done Freshworkshops. Look forward to more programs.

You need to edit your Wordpress theme. The theme design for your home page could be the index.php, page.php or a custom template.

Which theme are you using?

Benjamin,

You also have the option of purchasing the recorded version. We have had people in Australia and the UK take online training with us and we do rotate the times.

We are preparing the recording from last week and it should be ready by week's end.

Which one sounds more of interest to you? Wait for March live training or purchase recorded version?
